Different types of water softeners

There are various types of water softeners. And by ‘water softener’, we don’t, of course, mean a magnetic water softener but a proper water softener that removes 100% of limescale from the water. But first, we’ll explain the functioning of a Mooiwater water softener out.

How does a water softener from Mooiwater work?

In the Netherlands, the amount of limescale in tap water is usually expressed in German Hardness (dH). The average hardness of tap water in the Netherlands is 8 dH, which means that there is quite a lot of limescale (calcium and magnesium) in the water. A water softener removes this limescale from your tap water, thereby preventing limescale build-up.

Removing limescale with synthetic resin

Removing the existing lime This is what happens to the resin in the water softener. These tiny, rock-hard resin beads are capable of binding limescale to themselves. As a result, hard water soft water produced. They do this through a process known as ion exchange.

Over time, the synthetic resin beads become saturated (filled with calcium and magnesium particles) and are no longer able to bind limescale. To prevent this from happening, the resin beads must be cleaned from time to time. This is done by flushing them (a process known as regeneration) with brine.

Rinsing with salt

This entire flushing process takes place automatically and occurs on average twice a month (depending on factors such as water consumption, water hardness and the volume of resin). It takes about an hour and uses around 50 litres of water (depending on the type of water softener). The only thing the user needs to do is top up the salt required to make the brine. This salt is highly purified table salt and is therefore a natural product.

Rinsing produces a small amount of waste water containing the collected limescale. This water is discharged into the sewer via the drain.
