Do magnetic water softeners work?

We are often asked, ‘Does a magnetic water softener work??’. Now, of course, we sell genuine water softeners, so perhaps we’re not entirely impartial, but we do replace a lot of magnetic water softeners such as the Amfa4000 or Big Green for genuine water softeners. In addition, the TV programme Radar, as well as the Kassa and the Consumentenbond, have featured these water softeners. What do they say?

100% limescale-free water

Because people are still experiencing limescale build-up, they are swapping their cheaper magnetic water softeners for a proper water softener. There’s a good reason for this, of course, because even after installing a magnetic water softener, people still see limescale build-up, and it’s simply too measuring with a simple test.

What is the difference between a magnetic water softener such as the Amfa4000 and a salt-based water softener?

Salt

Mooiwater’s water softeners work on the principle of ion exchange. In other words, salt is used to remove limescale from the water (a bit of chemistry: Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ are exchanged for Na⁺). After descaling, there is therefore not a single trace of limescale left in the water. In other words, your whole house is limescale-free!

Magnet

Magnetic water softeners (such as the Amfa4000 or Big Green) are said to bind the limescale present in the water to the water itself, so that it does not stick to the pipes. Even if this were the case (for which there is no scientific evidence whatsoever), it would, at best, be a solution for keeping pipes clean. But of course not for the limescale build-up in your kitchen or bathroom nor does it mean a gentler wash or using less soap and shampoo. After all, the limescale isn’t removed from the water (you can simply measure this with a simple little test) and so the negative effects of this will therefore continue.

We therefore believe that the term ‘water softener’ – as used to refer to a magnetic water softener such as the Amfa 4000 – is misleading because it removes 0% limescale from the water.

Kassa water softener

We are sometimes asked whether any research has been carried out into whether the magnetic water softener actually works. Several international studies have been conducted (for those interested, read more here research by Timothy Keister) In addition, the TV programme, amongst others, Kassa, Radar and the Consumentenbond report on this in detail. They all come to the same conclusion: no limescale is being removed from the water, so you’re still affected by it.

Research into magnetic water softeners

The easiest way to find out whether a magnetic descalerr, such as the Amfa4000 or Big Green, is to carry out a quick test. There are various test kits available on the market. There is also a test kit available in our online shop. This test allows you to see straight away whether there is still limescale in your tap water or not. You’ll see that a ‘proper’ water softener removes 100% of limescale from the tap water, whereas with a magnetic water softener, the water hardness the same.

Do magnetic water softeners work?

As a magnetic water softener does not remove limescale from the water – meaning you will still experience its negative effects – we do not supply magnetic descalers. A magnetic water softener is a load of rubbish.
