MYTH: Magnetic water softeners have the same effect as ion-based water softeners

The water softeners from beautiful water They work on the principle of ion exchange. Put simply, salt is used to remove limescale from the water (Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ are exchanged for Na⁺). After descaling, there is therefore no trace of limescale left in the water. Your whole house is limescale-free!

There are also descaling products that work by magnetic basis. Its effectiveness has been called into question by, amongst others, the consumer programme KASSA and the Consumers’ Association. We, too, have very serious doubts about the effectiveness of this magnetic water softeners But it is clear that they do not remove limescale from the water. The limescale present in the water is said to be “bound”, thereby preventing it from sticking to the pipes. Even if that were the case, it is clear that this would, at best, only offer a solution for keeping pipes clean – but certainly not for softer laundry, savings on washing powder, reduced use of soap and shampoo, or shiny shower cubicles and bathroom fittings. After all, the limescale remains in the water and will therefore continue to have its negative effects. So we have our doubts about the magnetic water softeners.

We always say that if you’re going to buy a magnetic water softener anyway, you might as well get a really cheap one. It won’t work either, but at least you’ll save some money.

Salt-free water softeners

There are also other salt-free water softeners, such as Happy Drops, One Flow and Big Green. The main difference between these types of systems and the Mooiwater is that the other systems are not true water softeners. They do not remove the calcium from the water, which means that, particularly when the water is heated or evaporated, you will still experience the adverse effects of limescale.

100% limescale-free water

Mooiwater removes 100 % of limescale from the water. This can easily be measured using a simple test. You’ll find that when you take a reading on systems such as Happy Drops, just as with magnetic water softeners, you’ll still measure the same amount of limescale in the water.

Of course, the choice is yours, and we’re not exactly impartial, but there’s a good reason why we often end up replacing these systems with a ‘Mooiwater’ water softener at a later stage. It’s a waste of money if you initially buy a different system that seems cheaper at first glance, only to find you still need a proper water softener later on.
