Almost every household in the Netherlands is connected to the mains water supply. In the past, water towers were used to maintain a constant water pressure. With their water reserves and pressure, water towers compensated for fluctuations. Nowadays, the use of water towers has been phased out almost everywhere in the Netherlands, and the pressure is generated by electric pumps. These ensure sufficient pressure in your home. Nevertheless, there are often situations in which the water pressure is perceived as insufficient. Particularly since the rise of rain showers the water flow is often too low to enjoy a full jet.

When is the water pressure too low?

The water companies that supply our drinking water in the Netherlands are required to deliver water to your home at a minimum pressure of 1.5 bar. The pressure you actually experience is determined by the pressure at which your water company supplies water to the distribution network. In addition, water pressure depends on the distance between your home and the pumping station. The greater the distance, the lower the pressure. Every extra metre results in a loss of pressure. If the pressure drops below 1.0 bar, no water will come out of your tap. This must be prevented.

However, even if you have a sufficient water supply, the conditions in your home may still mean that there is low water pressure at your taps. Water meters and their effect on water pressure

A water meter is a measuring device used to regulate the amount of water supplied to a property. There are two types of water meters: old and new. Water companies are gradually replacing the old ones with the new ones. You can check for yourself whether you have an old or a new water meter. The old meters are marked ‘Qn’ and the new ones are marked ‘Q3’. These designations are followed by a number that indicates the size of your water meter. The most common water meter at present is Q3 = 2.5. This is equivalent to the old Qn = 1.5. The numbers following the ‘Q’ represent the volume capacity that your water meter can supply.
