MYTH: Softened water is bad for my blood pressure

The fact is that softened water contains more sodium (a component of salt) than hard water. But do carry on reading!

Sodium is used when descaling tap water. This is because sodium is a component of the salt (NaCl = sodium chloride) used to rinse the resin. It is often said colloquially that someone is on a low-salt diet, but in fact it is a low-sodium diet.

At soften To adjust the hardness from 8dH to 0dH, 68 milligrams of sodium per litre of water are added. This is negligible compared with the 4,000 mg of sodium we consume each day.

So it’s no problem at all, even for people on a low-sodium diet (or babies).

To live healthily, we need around 2 litres of fluid a day, which we get from the various drinks we consume throughout the day. Of those 2 litres, perhaps 1 litre comes in the form of tea, coffee or simply tap water. The rest we consume in the form of soft drinks, dairy products, and so on. In short, around 98% of our sodium intake comes from other foods. So yes, we do add some sodium, but this has a negligible effect.
