What is a limescale-removal appliance and how does it work?

Anti-limescale

The limescale prevention system (also known as a water softener or descaler (as mentioned) ensures that the limescale entering your home via your water mains is filtered out by the water softener. This water softener filters out the limescale using (synthetic) resin. The anti-limescale device is compact and will usually fit easily into your meter cupboard. You don’t need to worry about it at all, apart from having to top up the salt once every few months (when the resin is saturated).

No more limescale

The limescale in your tap water causes limescale build-up in your bathroom or kitchen. But that’s just the limescale you can see. Limescale also builds up quickly on the heating elements of your central heating system, water pump or washing machine. This limescale will continue to accumulate, reducing efficiency and eventually causing the appliances to break down.

With a limescale-prevention system, you have soft water rather than hard water. With soft water (limescale-free water), you don’t have these problems. What’s more, soft water has many other benefits, such as being better for your skin, meaning you need to use less soap and cleaning products, and of course it saves you a lot of time.

How much limescale is there in tap water?

Water hardness in the Netherlands is expressed in German degrees (°dH). This indicates how much limescale is present in your tap water. For example, at 1°dH, there are 17.8 grams of limescale per 1,000 litres of water. With an average water hardness of 8°dH and an annual water consumption of 150m³, this means you’ll have one kilogram of limescale in your pipes every two weeks. So the higher the °dH, the more limescale there is in the water.
