What is water hardness?
The water hardness indicates how much calcium and magnesium is present in your tap water. It is measured based on the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water. In other words, the more calcium and magnesium there is in the tap water, the harder the water is.
How hard is the tap water?
In the Netherlands, we print the water hardness expressed in dH (German degrees). It is calculated as follows: 1°dH means that there are 17.8 grams of limescale per 1,000 litres of water. So, with an average water hardness of 8°dH and an annual water consumption of 150m³, you will have one kilogram of limescale building up in your pipes every two weeks. In other words, the more limescale there is in the water, the higher the °dH value.

On average, water hardness in the Netherlands is 8 dH. However, there are significant differences across different postcode areas. This is because water is sourced from different sources. You can find out which source is used by contacting your water supplier.
Water softening

Water hardness in the rest of the country
The Water hardness in the Netherlands varies considerably: it ranges from just over 2 dH to as much as 15 dH. This is because water is sometimes sourced from low-calcium sources, such as surface water (rivers, streams) or water from the dunes. The water extracted from these sources generally has a low, natural hardness. However, in the Netherlands, groundwater is usually used. This almost always results in much higher water hardness because this water is found in calcium-rich soil layers. This is caused by the remains of shellfish that lived here thousands of years ago – when the Netherlands was still under water.
