Myth: Softened water tastes salty

To soften tap water, the minerals calcium and magnesium are removed from the water and replaced by the mineral sodium. It is only when sodium combines with chlorine that it forms salt (NaCl) and therefore tastes salty. As we only add sodium to the water and no chlorine, softened water does not taste salty.

Difference in taste

Nevertheless, some people do claim to taste a real difference between soft and hard water. And that may well be true; after all, we remove the calcium and magnesium and add sodium. Whether the difference can be tasted – and whether it makes the water taste better or worse – is a matter for the consumer to decide. For example, spring waters contain varying amounts of sodium, calcium and magnesium, amongst other things, and therefore always taste slightly different.
