Is it worth softening cold water?

It makes sense to soften cold water as well. Cold water contains just as much calcium and magnesium as hot water. It is true, however, that most of the actual limescale build-up (calcium carbonate) only occurs once the water is heated above a certain temperature. However, your cold tap water is not only used for drinking, for example, but is very often heated anyway, for instance in a coffee machine or a dishwasher.

What’s more, cold water does indeed leave limescale marks at times – just think of your toilet bowl. This is caused by cold water evaporating, causing the limescale dissolved in the water to precipitate. The cleaning products used for the toilet and your taps are specifically designed to remove that limescale.
