When you search online for the price of a water softener, you’ll notice that prices vary quite a bit. There are significant differences in cost when buying a water softener. But are the most expensive ones really the best? To begin with, one water softener doesn’t soften water any better than another — as long as we’re talking about real water softeners (and not, for example, magnetic devices).

Some suppliers try to make you believe that the most expensive systems are automatically the best. This is often said to justify the price difference between their product and a more affordable alternative. That’s simply not true. However, there are differences between water softeners. Technical differences between water softeners

The simplest and most affordable water softeners are time-controlled systems. They work well but regenerate at fixed intervals — for example, every fifteen days. If you happen to be on holiday, the system will still regenerate, even though it isn’t necessary. This means that even if the resin capacity hasn’t been used up, the system still flushes, resulting in unnecessary salt consumption.

So, whilst time-controlled systems do the job and are inexpensive to buy, they can be costly to run.

As well as time-controlled water softeners, there are other types, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Mooiwater offers proportional to time and volume water softeners, which offer the best balance between price and performance.

Annual costs

The annual running costs for low-cost, time-controlled water softeners can be roughly twice as high (€80 per year) as for proportional, time- and volume-controlled systems (€40 per year). This means you’ll quickly recoup the difference in purchase price.

Furthermore, if a unit is too small, it will operate at full capacity more often, which can reduce the resin’s lifespan over time.

Unfortunately, not all providers are this transparent. Some may offer a “10-year warranty”, but only on parts — meaning you still have to pay for travel and labour.
