5 tips for saving water
The Netherlands is a country of water, but even here it is getting warmer and water is becoming scarcer. That is why it is wise to use water sparingly in the Netherlands. How can you save water? Here are 5 tips to help you save water.
- Flush the toilet using less water.
- Use energy-efficient appliances
- Don’t leave the tap running
- Prevent leaks
- Water the garden in the evening and at night
1. Flush the toilet using less water
Most toilets use far too much water when flushing (an average of 9 litres). By placing a few bricks in the toilet cistern, you can reduce the number of litres used when flushing. The same result, but with less water.
2. Use energy-efficient appliances
Not all dishwashers and washing machines are equally energy-efficient. When buying one, check how energy-efficient the appliance is, as this can make a big difference to your water consumption. Older dishwashers and washing machines, in particular, are often not very water-efficient. That is why our water softeners With Mooiwater, use salt and water very sparingly.
3. Do not leave the tap running
When you’re cooking or washing your hands, don’t leave the tap running for longer than necessary. Only turn the tap on when you’re using it, and turn it off again when you’re finished. Similarly, when wet shaving, for example, it’s better to rinse the razor in a cup of water than to leave the tap running and rinse the blade under it. That way, you’ll save a lot of water.
4. Prevent leaks
Check your pipes and appliances for leaks from time to time. Although it may seem like only a small amount of water is involved, it will still add up because a leak continues constantly. So keep an eye on your water meter. For example, turn off all taps and check whether you’re still using water.
5. Do not water your garden during the day
If you water your garden during the day, the water evaporates quickly, so you end up using much more water. What’s more, water droplets can act like a magnifying glass and cause plants to get burnt. So if you’re going to water your garden, do it in the evening or at night.

How much calcium is there in drinking water?
Another frequently asked question about water. How much calcium is there in our drinking water? Water hardness in the Netherlands is expressed in German degrees (°dH). This indicates the amount of calcium in the drinking water. For example, at 1°dH, there are 17.8 grams of calcium per 1,000 litres of water. With an average water hardness of 8°dH and an annual water consumption of 150m³, this means you’ll have one kilogram of limescale in your pipes every two weeks. So the higher the °dH, the more limescale there is in the water.
