Technical differences between water softeners

The simplest and most affordable softeners are time-controlled systems. They work well but regenerate at fixed time intervals — for example, every fifteen days. If you happen to be on vacation, the system will still regenerate, even though it isn’t necessary. This means that even if the resin capacity isn’t used up, the system still flushes, resulting in unnecessary salt consumption.

So, while time-controlled systems do their job and are inexpensive to buy, they can be costly to operate.
