Why is limescale a nuisance?

Limescale in tap water has unpleasant consequences. This is because the limescale builds up in your pipes (causing a loss of water pressure), in your central heating system (reducing its efficiency), and in your appliances (shortening their lifespan). You’ll also notice unsightly limescale deposits on your shower walls, tiles and taps.

It is very easy to measure water hardness (the amount of limescale in your tap water) yourself. Using a water hardness test kit, you can measure the amount of limescale in the water yourself. You can purchase the water hardness test kit from our online shop.

With an anti-limescale system – also known as a water softener – you’ll never have to descale again. All you need to do is top up the salt once every two to three months.

There are various ways to descale. For example, you can use cleaning vinegar, lemon or the old-fashioned descaling tablets. But of course, the best thing is to prevent limescale from getting into your tap water in the first place. You can do this with a water softener.

• Key dates: From 1 January 2027, all new products must comply with these strict European regulations. Products currently on sale have until 2030 at the latest (and in some cases 2032) to bring themselves fully into compliance.
